ERP Best Practice #2 - EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

We've used several XML web services to provide outside-the-firewall business partner and supplier integration. While we would prefer to use web services for all of our ERP system integration, we have one major trading partner that is forcing us to implement EDI (due to their own inability to get with the times). We looked at using Aplicor's base EDI constructs, however, because our trading partner's EDI process varies from industry standards (e.g. their PO is quite different from a form 850), we decided to use a third party tool to accelerate the process and eliminate much of the custom programming. We were pleased to find four tools seemingly capable of doing the job.

All of the tools were quite inexpensive (less than $1000 USD) and compatible with Aplicor's .NET underlying technology. We ultimately chose the IP*Works solution. It took some time to refamiliarize ourselves with the EDI world of terms and protocols and while we still prefer to use web services, IP*Works does the job for this particular business situation.
